The Meaning of Advent
Advent is a special time of year that helps us get ready for Christmas. The word “Advent” means “coming” or “arrival,” and it’s all about getting our hearts ready for the arrival of Jesus. It lasts for about four weeks before Christmas, starting on a Sunday, and it’s a season of waiting, hope, and excitement.
During Advent, we think about how much the world needed Jesus before He was born in Bethlehem. People waited a long time for God to send a Savior, and when Jesus came, it was a time of great joy. Now, during Advent, we remember that first Christmas, but we also think about how Jesus promised to come back someday. So, Advent is about both remembering and looking forward.
Many families and churches use an Advent wreath to help mark the season. The wreath has four candles—one for each week of Advent. Sometimes there’s a fifth candle in the middle, called the Christ candle, which is lit on Christmas Day. Each week, when we light a candle, we talk about things like hope, peace, joy, and love—things Jesus brings into the world.
Advent is also a time to slow down and think about what’s most important. It’s easy to get caught up in shopping, decorations, and parties, but Advent reminds us to focus on Jesus, to be kind to others, and to get ready in our hearts for the celebration of His birth.
In short, Advent is like preparing for the best birthday party ever—the birthday of Jesus. It’s a time to be grateful, share love, and remember how much God cares for us and the world.
