Christmas Traditions
Christmas is celebrated in lots of different ways around the world, and some traditions might seem a little strange or surprising! Here are a few unique ones:
In Japan, Christmas is not a religious holiday for most people, but they’ve made it all about eating fried chicken! Families often order a big bucket of KFC to share on Christmas Eve, and it’s so popular that people have to order weeks in advance.
In Iceland, kids don’t just wait for Santa Claus. They have 13 “Yule Lads,” mischievous characters who visit one by one in the 13 days before Christmas. Each one leaves small gifts in children’s shoes if they’ve been good—or a rotten potato if they’ve been naughty!
In Venezuela, people in the capital city, Caracas, roller skate to church on Christmas morning. The streets are even closed to cars so that everyone can safely skate to Mass!
In Norway, there’s a tradition of hiding all the brooms in the house on Christmas Eve. This comes from an old belief that witches and evil spirits might come out at night and steal the brooms to fly around.
In Ukraine, some Christmas trees are decorated with fake spider webs! This comes from a story about a poor family who couldn’t afford decorations. Legend says that spiders spun beautiful webs on their tree, which turned to gold and silver on Christmas morning.
In Germany, some people hide a pickle ornament in their Christmas tree. Whoever finds it first gets a special prize or good luck for the year!
These unusual traditions show how people around the world celebrate Christmas in their own creative ways, making it a holiday full of surprises and fun!
